Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas

A species of oyster that occurs naturally in the northern Pacific Ocean, from Japan to the Bering Strait.

A single oyster can release up to 200 million eggs during its annual spawning. They have a lifespan of around 20 years.

In 2024, it was reported that 15 tonnes of Pacific oysters were collected by volunteers and organisations in the municipality of Oslo.

15 tonnes of Pacific oysters correspond to approximately 150,000 individuals.
